Ceramic Fiber Blanket vs Ceramic Fiber Board: How to Choose for Industrial Furnace Backup Insulation?

In industrial furnaces, backup insulation is installed behind the hot-face working lining to reduce heat transfer while accommodating the structural requirements of furnace walls, roofs, and equipment interfaces.

Both Ceramic Fiber Blanket and Ceramic Fiber Board can be used in suitable backup insulation applications. Selection should begin with the actual long-term operating temperature, required thermal resistance, and available insulation thickness, followed by an evaluation of flexibility, dimensional stability, and fabrication requirements.

CCEWOOL supplies both product types with corresponding fabrication support. By comparing their structural characteristics, installation conditions, and processing capabilities, customers can determine whether a ceramic blanket or Ceramic Fiber Board is better suited to a specific furnace backup insulation application.

Different Product Structures Provide Flexible Conformability or Rigid Dimensional Stability

CCEWOOL Ceramic Fiber Blanket is manufactured using a double-sided internal needling process that mechanically interlocks the fibers without organic binders. This creates a flexible roll material that can be bent, wrapped, and compressed as required. Common densities include 64, 96, 128, and 160 kg/m3.

The flexible structure allows the blanket to be installed continuously while adapting to curved surfaces, corners, and local gaps.

Ceramic Fiber Board is manufactured from ceramic fibers combined with suitable binders, using forming, drying or curing, and cutting processes according to the specific product series. Available density examples across different series and thicknesses include 280, 300, 320, 350, and 360 kg/m3, with specifications determined by the relevant product data sheet.

The board structure helps maintain flatness, fixed thickness, and fabricated profiles, making it suitable for pre-shaped backup insulation components.

Where compressive stress or load transfer is involved, the compressive properties of the specific board grade and the structural support design must also be verified. Rigidity refers to the ability to maintain shape and dimensions; it does not automatically mean the board can support arbitrary loads from refractory working linings or furnace floors.

Different Installation Positions Require Consideration of Actual Thickness and Installed Conditions

For continuous furnace wall and roof backup insulation, insulation behind Ceramic Fiber Modules, or curved surfaces, ceramic fiber blanket insulation can be installed in flat-laid layers, with staggered joints, or as compressed filling according to the lining design.

Compression changes both the installed thickness and actual density of the blanket. Therefore, thermal performance should be evaluated based on its installed condition. Greater compression alone does not necessarily result in better insulation performance.

For regular backup areas behind refractory bricks or castables, furnace door backup insulation, and equipment interfaces requiring fixed thickness, Ceramic Fiber Board is better suited to maintaining the required profile.

For example, some multilayer furnace walls may use the following arrangement, subject to thermal design:

Hot-Face Refractory + Ceramic Fiber Board + Ceramic Fiber Blanket + Steel Shell

In this configuration, the hot-face refractory serves as the working lining, the board provides a dimensionally stable backup layer, and the flexible blanket near the furnace shell helps accommodate local gaps and dimensional variations.

This example illustrates how the two materials can perform complementary functions. The actual layer arrangement, temperature grades, and thicknesses must still be determined according to project requirements.

CCEWOOL offers corresponding blanket and board specifications, allowing customers to compare furnace backup insulation solutions based on operating temperature, available installation space, and interface dimensions rather than material rigidity alone.

Different Fabrication Methods Turn Engineering Drawings into Suitable Backup Insulation Components

Ceramic Fiber Blanket is suitable for cut-to-size processing, slitting, custom widths, flexible filling strips, and multilayer assemblies. The main considerations are roll dimensions, edge integrity, and adaptability during installation.

For curved surfaces and interfaces requiring compression, matching the material dimensions in advance can help reduce repeated adjustments on site.

Ceramic Fiber Board is suitable for CNC cutting, drilling, grooving, beveling, and stepped machining.

CCEWOOL can fabricate board profiles, holes, and grooves according to furnace lining drawings, allowing components to accommodate mounting hardware and fit adjacent insulation boards. For regular surfaces or prefabricated backup components, this dimensional control can help reduce on-site trimming and fitting work.

Where flexible conformability and gap filling are required, ceramic blanket is generally the preferred option for evaluation. Where fixed thickness and precisely machined profiles are needed, ceramic fiber board insulation is often more suitable.

By combining both product types with drawing-based fabrication, CCEWOOL helps align material selection, supplied dimensions, and installation interfaces with the actual furnace lining design.

Ultimately, the comparison between Ceramic Fiber Blanket and Ceramic Fiber Board should focus on the requirements of the same backup insulation position.

By first confirming thermal requirements and then selecting the appropriate product structure and fabrication method, CCEWOOL provides flexible and rigid backup insulation solutions that meet insulation needs while supporting practical on-site installation.
