Which factors can affect refractory fiber’s heat conductivity ?

As a refractory ceramic fiber used in high temperature, heat conductivity is an important parameter to test material effects,such as heat conductivity will determine the insulation effect of ceramic fibers. Heat conductivity is the capacity of material heat transmission. Generally speaking, heat conductivity represents different material’s thermal conductivity, which unit is W/m·K. It represents the rate of heat flow through unit area under unit temperature.

The factors which effect heat conductivity are as follows:

1. Chemical composition of material, the more complex of chemical composition, the more impurities, or the more other sosoloids, the lower of its heat conductivity. The more complex of Mineral crystal’s structure, the smaller of its heat conductivity. For example, MgO·Al2O3 ‘s heat conductivity is lower than AL2O3 and MgO,

3Al2O3·2SiO2’s structure is more complex than MgO·Al2O3, therefore the heat conductivity is lower.

2.Air hole of the material. The amount, size, shape and distribution of air hole in the material has influence on heat conductivity. The air has low heat conductivity, the bigger of porosity, the smaller the heat conductivity is with certain temperature and porosity limitation. Such as the fibers of ceramic fiber products cross to form many air holes, when the heat pass through the ceramic fibers, it needs to pass many crossed air holes firstly, so the most heat won’t come out that reach an excellent insulation effects.

3.Temperature. The working temperature influences the heat conductivity, the higher the temperature is, the higher the heat conductivity is. 

4.Refractory insulation material’s heat conductivity is related to chemical composition, but has an important influence to heat shock resistance. Generally, the bigger the heat conductivity is, the better it’s thermal shock resistance is, which indicates that when the temperature changes a lot, its resistance to damage is better. For example, refractory ceramic fibers can stay excellent insulation property with common temperature and 1400C due to refractory ceramic fiber has lower heat conductivity that could adapt high temperature.
